TEFL FAQs
How much does a TEFL teacher earn?
TEFL teachers earn approximately $500-$1200 in Latin America, $1500-$3000 in the Middle East, $1200-$1900 in Europe and $1000-$3000 in Asia. The location, school type and teacher’s experience and qualifications make salaries vary.
Do not be sucked in by salaries as your reason to choose a specific country.
Remember, the salary in Tokyo, Japan, is $2500 per month but the cost of living per month can be $2000. At the end of the month, you may only have $500 in your savings as Tokyo is an expensive place to live.
In contrast, the salary in Cambodia is around $1500 but the cost of living can be $750. Because it is so inexpensive to live in Cambodia, you can save $750.
These numbers are a rough estimate but you get the idea!
What is a TEFL course?
TEFL courses train and prepare you for teaching English as a foreign language abroad to non-native English speakers. They can be taken online or in-person usually between 120 hours and higher. The best courses include live teaching practicum.
The courses we offer are 4 weeks long and are held in Asia, Europe and Latin America. You will study teaching methods, classroom management, how to prepare lesson plans and much more.
For a detailed look into the world of TEFL, we recommend you check out our in-depth article called – What is TEFL.
Is TEFL hard to pass?
It is not too difficult nor too easy to pass. It requires dedication and effort as with any adult course. If you are aiming to be a teacher, you should be capable of learning, practising and being tested on your abilities and knowledge.
It is your language, after all, you will be surprised at how much you know about it. As for managing the classroom and disciplining students, it can be difficult for those who have never worked with children before. Learning how to maintain control of a group without going too far and upsetting students is a tough skill to master but a skill you should definitely learn.
These courses aren’t made to catch you out, they are to train you on how to deal with others and transfer your knowledge.
These are things we do on a daily basis without even realising it, so do not be afraid of taking a TEFL course, as you will have the team and the other students there beside you every step of the way to help you!
How much does it cost to get a TEFL certificate?
You cannot buy a TEFL certificate, it must be earned by completing a TEFL course. Accredited TEFL courses cost between $500-and $2500 with online courses being cheaper than in-person courses.
Like anything in life, you get what you pay for, and this is true of TEFL. There are many great online courses you can take but you do not get the benefits of in-person courses. You do not have a group of other teachers to practise and swap ideas with.
Some cheap courses you see online will promise you a TEFL certificate if you pass their quick and easy $50 course. Most times these courses are not accredited which means they are not recognised internationally by many schools and governments.
We have heard stories from TEFL teachers that fell into this trap and when they moved abroad to teach they were not allowed a working visa or work permit as the government officials did not trust the company or accreditation of the certificate.
