How much do TEFL teachers earn in Indonesia?

A typical salary for TEFL teachers in Bali is $725 – $1,200 per month.

You can get par rises the longer you stay in a school which is excellent when on an hourly wage. During busy times you can easily make over $1,500 per month.

Accommodation and the cost of living are incredibly cheap in Indonesia, allowing your salary to go much further than you might think.

If you are a qualified teacher in your home country with teaching experience, you can earn more than the average salary.

Private, international and language schools tend to pay more than public schools. Don’t let money decide what you do. Choose the school or language centre that works best for you and enjoy your teaching career.

What's fun to do in Bali?

Some of our favourite things to do are:

  • River rafting on the Ayung River – you get to soak up Bali’s natural beauty as you float through the Ayung valley.
  • Hiking up Mount Batur the views from the top of Mount Batur are breathtaking and even better when watching the amazing sunrise over Lake Batur.
  • Exploring temples in Ubud where you can see some incredible artwork. Bathe in the Holy Springs of Tirta Empul, Bali’s Sacred Pool of Purification, is a must!
  • Watching sunsets – on one of our favourite beaches close by called Bingin Beach.
  • Enjoying drinks – on the beach with a view of Mount Agung.
  • Visiting Nusa Penida and getting to explore one of Indonesia’s hidden gems! Take a camera!
  • Odyssey Submarine Tour Dive down into the tropical clear blue waters just off the coast of Bali. You will see fish and sea creatures like never before.

Anything that you do in Bali is amazing. There are endless possibilities for your TEFL course here – make sure to take advantage of them all while you’re studying abroad!

Can I teach English in Bali without a degree?

Having a degree is a requirement for teaching English in Indonesia. School’s will only accept teachers that can send proof of their qualifications and that they attended TEFL courses.

You’re not required to have a degree in child care, teaching or English to work in Indonesia. Any field of study is accepted. Like most countries in Asia, the requirement is for official reasons.

You must show the government you are in the country to work legally as a TEFL teacher and that you are sponsored by the school you are with.

It is still possible to teach English in Indonesia online. You will have to apply for a digital nomad visa. You will still need to be TEFL certified to start teaching English online.

Being a digital nomad doesn’t mean you can arrive in Indonesia and start teaching online. You will have to have an online business that is your main source of income. Teaching English as a foreign language online can only be a side job to your main business.

But for those looking to live in Bali as a digital nomad and also earn extra cash, you can teach English online or do TEFL courses while in Bali.

Is it hard to get a teaching job in Bali?

There are many jobs all over Indonesia, not just on the island of Bali.

Since Bali is the main attraction of English teachers moving abroad, it means there can be times when jobs in Indonesia are slim pickings!

While there are job openings popping up in Bali constantly, you should consider teaching English in schools in other locations and expand your travel adventure.

You could also do your TEFL course in Bali and use the course to help you secure a teaching job in a local school.

The benefits of doing TEFL courses in the country you plan to work in are:

  • You are already there and can do an interview in person rather than over Skype!
  • You can also begin immediately instead of having to book flights and travel there.
  • Finally, the schools in Bali and Indonesia all recognize the TEFL school in Bali and would feel safe taking you as a teacher instead of a teacher with a random online TEFL certificate!

So, by doing a TEFL course in Bali, you would have a huge advantage of getting hired in the best schools!

What's the lifestyle like in Bali?

Bali is a laid-back place with beautiful scenery. You will find those who live in Bali, Indonesia, to be very friendly and welcoming!

The island is full of sunshine, food and fun, and you’ll never want to leave. The lifestyle here revolves around family & religion, which means the people are more conservative, but this also makes for good living.

There are many spiritual places on the island of Bali that you can visit to experience a new lifestyle and explore different religions.

The TEFL course in Indonesia or TEFL courses in Asia will give you great insight into how other people live, especially if this is your first time abroad!

Teaching English as a TEFL teacher in Indonesia is a dream come true. The TEFL course will give you the skills to teach English abroad and start your new life!

Should I work in Bali or another area in Indonesia?

Bali is the most popular TEFL location in Indonesia, and it’s easy to see why. If you are looking for a life-changing opportunity in TEFL, Bali could be your best option!

You should check out other cities in Indonesia that many travellers and teachers have been to and much prefer to Bali as it offers a much more authentic Indonesian lifestyle than the more tourist centred Bali.

One option is Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital city and largest! There are over 10 million people in Jakarta, so there are many teaching jobs available in Jakarta city.

Some people love the big city life with its abundance of shopping malls, restaurants and bars but many people also like the quiet life. Somewhere tucked away in the jungle or by the beach.

There are too many lovely towns and cities to mention, but we loved Manado and Solo! Two gorgeous places, and proof that you don’t need to be in the big city to enjoy your time abroad.

Where will I stay in Bali?

Accommodation is not included with the course, but I will, of course, still help you find the best place to stay within your budget!

You should stay close to the training centre in Canggu if you plan to get around on foot, tuk-tuk or public transport, but if you are driving a car or bike, you can go further out.

Accommodation is easy to find in Bali, and it is usually such good quality and comfortable for really low prices!

Once you book your course, I can send you some helpful information about staying in Bali that previous teachers have recommended.

Pro Tip: Check out Airbnb in Bali. If you book for over 30 days, you will often get a huge discount of up to 50%, and you will also get to see the amazing accommodation available around the town.

Also, if you were planning on renting an apartment, the Airbnb strategy means you don’t have to put down a deposit and first-month rent together. You just have to pay your rent, and then you can move on to another place after that.

Why do a TEFL course in Bali?

You’ll get a TEFL certification and a TEFL job in Indonesia which is unlike anywhere in the world.

The weather is beautiful, the food is delicious, there are waterfalls to explore, and it’s cheap too!

Bali has many things that make for an amazing TEFL course location, such as its natural beauty, great things to do, amazing nightlife and friendly people.

In the four weeks of our TEFL Course In Asia, we will be giving you TEFL certification and helping to place you as a TEFL teacher within Indonesia! You will have help with everything, which makes it worthwhile rather than doing a course online and never using it, which happens all too often!

We have taught many students from around the world before and are confident that if they can teach TEFL in Bali, you can too!

Is a TEFL course in Bali worth it?

Travelling around the world to Bali, Indonesia, to do 4 week teacher training courses and teaching practice to get an internationally recognized TEFL certificate…

…and find job placement teaching English to speakers of other languages…

…and trying to have an awesome time while doing it sounds like a hard thing to achieve!

But when you plan it right and have the right people to help you, it is super easy, and you will look back on the experience as some of the best memories you’ll ever make and it will be 100% worth it!

Teachers who do TEFL/ TESOL teacher training courses abroad rarely regret their choice. Over 50% of TEFL/ TESOL teachers continue teaching the English language in the same country after their first contract.

Over 25% of TEFL/ TESOL teachers move to another country to continue their teaching careers.

The other teachers either return home after their teaching practice and a nice 4 week break seeing the world. Since you can teach English anywhere, many return home to use their teaching training to teach English online.
