How much do TEFL teachers earn in Cambodia?

The average salary for TEFL teachers in Cambodia with no teaching experience or college degree is 4,050,000 KHR – 4,860,000 KHR a month.

This is approx. – $1,000 – $1,200 (USD) / £730 – £875 (GBP) per month.

1,000,000 KHR is approx.

  • $246.91 USD
  • £184.89 GBP
  • €207.88 EUR

Salaries will always differ from school to school and town to town. A teacher in an international school in the capital of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, will have a higher monthly salary than a teacher in a public school in a small village.

Most schools, such as language centres, will pay you by the hour. Most TEFL teachers in Cambodia have a 25+ hour work week and can receive anywhere from $10 – $13 an hour.

There may be more jobs in the capital city of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, than in Koh Kong City, Koh Kong Island or the entire Koh Kong Province, but that is to be expected since Phnom Penh is the capital city after all.

Do you need a degree to teach English in Cambodia?

Cambodia is the only country in Asia where it is legal to teach English as a foreigner without any degree.

Native English speakers with or without a degree are welcome to Cambodia to train to be a TEFL teacher and to work in Cambodian schools.

The only difference between having a degree and not having one in Cambodia is that those with it can sometimes negotiate for a higher salary.

Always remember a person with a degree may not have any previous working experience whereas a non-degree holder may have years of work and life experience.

Don’t let a qualification get in your way of doing this amazing career!

How long is a TEFL certificate valid in Cambodia?

The certificate you receive in Cambodia when you complete the course is valid forever. You can use your TEFL certification to work anywhere in Cambodia or any country in the world for the rest of your teaching career.

Our TEFL certification is accredited and will last you a lifetime, so have no fear of it ever expiring or not being accepted.

Many teachers use their certificates to hop from country to country, teaching English and travelling the world while getting paid, so now it is your turn!

Is it hard to get a teaching job in Cambodia?

You will have no issue finding a TEFL job in Cambodia if you are a native English speaker and have an accredited TEFL certificate.

English is becoming the universal language of Asia, and it is how many non-native English speakers communicate to other non-native English speakers. You will often meet travellers from Japan speaking English to locals in Cambodia.

This is constantly growing, especially in the business sector as many companies now pay for their staff to take English lessons to improve their skillset.

As Cambodia is developing extremely fast, this can only mean more business will be set up. More international business will take place, meaning more and more job opportunities for people wanting to teach English abroad in Cambodia.

Some benefits of doing TEFL courses in the country you plan to work in are:

  • You are already there and can do an interview in person rather than over Skype!
  • You can also begin immediately as you are already there!
  • Finally, the TEFL school in Cambodia is well recognised throughout the country. Schools will jump at the chance to hire teachers from a TEFL school in Cambodia rather than somewhere else.

So, by doing a TEFL course in Cambodia, you would have a huge advantage of getting hired in the best schools!

Is a TEFL certificate worth it in Cambodia?

It is essential to have a TEFL certification if you plan on teaching English in Cambodia. The industry standard is a minimum 120 hour TEFL certificate. Most schools will not even contact you if you do not have a TEFL certificate and choose the teacher.

The skills you learn when you work abroad are invaluable and can take you to any country you plan on teaching English. The lessons on handling children of different ages, creating lesson plans, and keeping the students engaged are essential and universal.

It is 100% worth it if you plan on travelling from country to country. TEFL certification is the golden key that unlocks all countries.

There are not many ways regular people can move abroad to any country to live and work. Usually, you need to be hired by a big company or start your own company in that country to be given a long term visa.

Teaching English as a foreign language is special and gives people many opportunities and a chance to see the world.

How long does it take to get TEFL certified in Cambodia?

This in-class TEFL course will take 140 hours to complete over a period of 4 weeks.

You might think it is a long time, but since you’re abroad in a new country, you’ll constantly be excited and adventurous so that the time will fly by!

You will have class from Monday to Friday, and you have weekends free to explore the area or head to Phnom Penh for a night or two.

There will be city tours and adventures and a couple of parties included in the course to make this the best experience ever!!

To get certified, you must complete your live teaching practice and pass all your exams. Once this is done, you are ready to get a teaching position in schools and language centres around Cambodia and South East Asia!

Where will I stay in Cambodia?

Accommodation is not included with the course, but I will, of course, still help you find the best place to stay within your budget!

I have a few select accommodation options at reduced rates for our teachers.

Once you book our course I will send you all the info and photos of the accommodation inside our welcome email.

What qualification do you need to teach English in Cambodia?

The only qualification you need to teach English in Cambodia as a TEFL teacher is to be a native English speaker. You are not required to have a university degree or previous teaching experience.

A TEFL course will train you on everything you need to teach English as a foreign language.

Doing a TEFL study program in Cambodia will be even more useful if you plan to only teach in Cambodia as you will be trained in the country and with Cambodian people in the live practice teaching, which the course provides.

This way, you will settle into Cambodia with a group of people on the same journey as you, and you will learn how to approach teaching Cambodian children and adults.

International TEFL courses can mean a long application process due to visas, so make sure to provide your personal data early to the training centre for all international TEFL/TESOL programs.

Do I need to speak Cambodian or Khmer to work in Cambodia?

You are not required to speak Cambodian/ Khmer to live and work in Cambodia. Most foreigners that move to Cambodia try to learn it and even take classes. This will make day to day life easier, but you can go without knowing a word and make it through your contract without knowing the language. It is up to you.

It is always beneficial to learn some common phrases such as thank you and hello before you go anywhere.

As you are there for an extended period of time, you will begin to pick up words and phrases without even knowing it.

You could start by learning how to order food at a street food restaurant. Or how to ask for directions to a popular tourist destination like the royal palace or Cardamom mountains. They aren’t exactly within walking distance, but you should get a free e-guide about them and have an adventure.
