How much will I earn in Thailand?

On average, the salary for TEFL teachers in Thailand is 35,000 THB – 43,000 THB but can go higher.

This is approx. – $1,170 – $1,435 (USD) / £850 – £1,050 (GBP) per month.

Salaries will fluctuate in Thailand depending on your experience and qualifications. Also, the school you work in is a private, public or language centre, and which city you are located.

If you are in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, you can earn more than in Hua Hin. The cost of living in Bangkok is higher, so the salary will match that rise.

Another factor is if you are on a salary or hourly wage. Most teaching jobs in Thailand come with a per hour payment. This can be good or bad.

If you are in a private or public school, you are safe as your classes should be constant throughout the year. If you are in a language centre, you could have busy weeks and quiet weeks.

Some weeks you could work 60+ hours and some only 20. It can be a nice balance as you get the paycheck from the busy week, and you can enjoy it on the quiet weeks, which makes it worth it.

Where will I stay in Thailand?

We have sourced gorgeous accommodation for our TEFL teachers in Bangkok!

Since you will be staying for 30 nights, we have done deals with local hotels and businesses to give us “mates rates” so you and your friends can stay somewhere clean, comfortable and close by!

The price for 30 nights ranges from $160 – $469, depending on your budget.

To get more info, get in touch about the Bangkok course or check out this article, and we can send you the photos and details of all the hotels!

The hotels include:

  • Free WIFI
  • Rooftop swimming pool
  • Free gym access
  • A/C, TV, Fridge, etc
  • Spacious room with balcony
  • Nearby tourist attractions
  • Laundry service

For those who prefer finding their own accommodation, be sure to choose somewhere safe, with an A/C and not too far from the training centre.

After the TEFL course, it will be up to you to find accommodation in whichever city you choose to go to. Rent in Thailand is extremely good value, and you can find a one-bedroom condo with a swimming pool and gym in most cities for half or even a third of what we may pay back home!

What qualifications do I need to teach in Thailand?

Thailand is stringent on its requirements for teaching English. You must have, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree and TEFL certification to start teaching abroad in Thailand.

For your school to get the work permit and work visa process started, you must be able to present your university/ college degree and even get it notarised, in most cases. This means you will need to go to your embassy in Bangkok for them to authenticate your degree.

You will also need to present your TEFL certificate as proof that you have complete a TEFL course and are in the country to teach English.

If you are working in Thailand for a Thai company/ school, you must be registered legally and, of course, pay taxes on your income. This is why all foreigners that move to Thailand to work or teach English must follow these procedures.

If you do not do this and you begin teaching English in a school without a work permit, you could be deported and banned from re-entering Thailand if you get caught.

Is it hard to get a teaching job in Thailand?

With over 80 million people in Thailand, there are more than enough schools and language centres for everyone to teach and make good use of that TEFL certificate.

New jobs are opening up in different parts of Thailand constantly! Most will be in Bangkok as it has the highest population of any city in Thailand, but you can always find teaching jobs in small and regular-sized cities like Isan, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin or Phuket.

There has been a push in Thailand for Thai citizens to become more proficient in the English language as many see it as an opportunity for a better life.

This means Thailand is encouraging TEFL teachers worldwide to come with their TEFL certification and find a teaching job.

Finding a TEFL job in Thailand is not difficult. If you cannot find a teaching position on any online TEFL job placement sites, you can apply directly to schools.

Since you have a TEFL certificate, you must have completed a TEFL certification course, so you should contact them, and they will assist you in finding a teaching position in Thailand.

If you have taken a TEFL course in Thailand, your TEFL school or TEFL provider will organise teaching interviews in local schools as part of the course package.

This is a huge benefit of TEFL courses abroad, as you are ready to do interviews in the country. This gives you a massive advantage over TEFL teachers applying from their home countries.

Can I teach English online in Thailand?

You can join teaching platforms from Thailand very easily if you have a TEFL certificate. Some schools disapprove of teaching online when you work for them, so be sure to ask them if they will allow it.

It is a bit of a crazy rule since they cannot see what you do from your home, but I have to mention it because they have the power to terminate your contract if they catch you!!

If you wish to move to Thailand to teach English online and not to work in a school or a Thai company, then you will have to get a long-stay tourist visa and do border runs to Cambodia or Laos every three months, or you can apply for a digital nomad visa.

Though, it sounds nice, teaching a few hours per day and heading to the beach to watch the sunset with a couple of bottles of Singha or Leo every evening. Teaching English in Thailand is definitely a good career move!

Should I work in Bangkok or a similar city?

Ask yourself if you want the crazy urban life with something always going on, a fantastic nightlife scene, excellent restaurants and shopping malls, and all the other exciting things that come with living in a capital city.

Or, you could move to a beachside town, still with good restaurants and good nightlife, but with the great added bonus of being next to the beach. And when you live in a tropically hot country, it’s nice to have a beach nearby for your days off!

If you choose to live in Bangkok after the course, you should be prepared for sharing a city with 10 million other people, pollution, higher prices, and needing public transport to get around such a massive city.

If you go to a smaller city, be sure to remember that it could be quieter than you wanted and fewer things to do.

Once you figure out what you want, it is easier to make a choice from there.

There are so many unique little towns and cities in Thailand. People always think it is only Bangkok and Phuket, but other places in Thailand are just as beautiful, such as  Chiang Mai, Krabi and Pattaya, all with entirely distinct vibes and atmospheres.

What's the lifestyle like in Thailand?

Thailand is relaxed and laidback. I know those mean pretty much the same thing, but living there can be so laidback that it’s relaxing (if you get me!).

Thai people work very hard and in their free time also like to enjoy themselves. You will always see shops, restaurants and bars full of life, which is great!

Their primary focus is on enjoying life and being friendly to those around you. It is that simple. You will work all your hours in your TEFL school, but it won’t feel like work because it can be so much fun most days. After all, the children are such characters.

After school, you and the other teachers can head for a bite to eat, there are always many restaurants and street food markets open nearby. Night markets are a big thing in Thailand, and you find the craziest things at them!

The nightlife in Thailand is excellent. If you go to a party town like Pattaya, you will find all sorts of nightclubs and pubs, and famous beach parties in Phuket.

What's the food like in Thailand?

If you are a picky eater, don’t worry, you are safe! The food in Thailand is awesome!

Most restaurants and markets have the food you are used to from back home but have much more interesting options.

Nobody will force you to eat grasshoppers, although I’ve heard from my Thai friends that they go great on a pizza!

You will see many things being served that you would never see back home. However, Don’t be scared of it. Embrace it and start to try new things. Try a grub or beetle or put a few termites in your rice. You won’t even know they’re there!

Most apartments in Thailand don’t have an oven or grill. Yes, it is weird, we know, and very hard to get used to! It is for this reason that all Thai people eat out every day. Most people don’t cook at all and have every meal at a restaurant or street vendor.

Eating out is actually cheaper than eating in, so you can see why there is always a good atmosphere when you go out.

Like all Thai people will tell you, “we have been eating this food all our lives, and we are still alive”, so dive in and bon appetit!
