How much will I earn in Vietnam?

On average, the salary for TEFL teachers in Vietnam is

1,000 USD – 2,000 USD a month.

  • Private Language Schools/ Institutes: 1,200 USD – 1,800 USD for doing a 20/ 30 hour week.
  • Public Schools: Between 1,500 USD – 2,100 USD per month but could have a longer working week.
  • Universities: Up to approx 2,200 USD.

The pay rate for TEFL teachers will vary depending on your experience, type of classes (private tutoring & regular public school classes, etc.) and your motivation.

You can easily teach online and tutor privately in your free time for anywhere from 60 USD to 100 USD per hour! We will guide you to the best resources for teaching online, and you will meet people along your way looking for Private and Business classes.

With renting an apartment costing approx. $250 – $500 per month you can quickly save up your cash.

English is forever growing worldwide as a dominant language, and most countries and businesses need to adapt to stay in the game socially and economically. This gives us TEFL teachers an untapped amount of earning potential and people & businesses to help!

Where will I stay in Ho Chi Minh?

Accommodation in Ho Chi Minh City is very cheap and can cost you anywhere from $175 to $500 for the month, depending on your budget!

Once you have booked your course, we can begin to send you accommodation suggestions. These will be places our previous teachers have stayed and recommended highly.

If you plan to stay in a rented apartment or condo, you will have to pay a deposit and the first month’s rent upfront. This can be difficult for some people, so you can go onto Airbnb and find a nine place nearby. The benefit of Airbnb is that you don’t need to pay a deposit. You only pay for your stay.

What qualificatios do I need to teach in Vietnam?

Vietnam requires TEFL teachers to have a Bachelor’s degree or higher and a TEFL certificate to teach English in Vietnamese schools.

Many countries in Asia require their TEFL teachers to have a degree and TEFL certification because they prove that you have come to Vietnam to work.

In the past, too many people abused the system to get a long term visa to stay in Vietnam as a vacation or retirement plan and not to work.

It is also believed that ESL students will receive a better education from a college graduate, but that is not always the case. As most people know, a degree does not make a person a better teacher.

Be careful not to begin a teaching job in Vietnam without a degree as it is against the law, and you could face serious consequences.

Is it hard to get a teaching job in Vietnam?

Over 97 million people are living in Vietnam. While many can speak English, the vast majority cannot.

With English dominating as the universal language for everything from business to movies, Vietnamese people see the benefits of learning English.

Even better, the people of Vietnam see the opportunity for their children and push them to learn English. We are not saying it is good that you must know English to get ahead in life, but this is the reality of the world.

A high proportion of the tourists that visit Vietnam each year are native English speakers. The rest even communicate in English as the common language.

People from India, Russia and Germany, for example, know that there is more chance of people from other countries speaking English rather than Hindi, Russian or German!

So, from this, most countries, especially tourist dependant countries like Vietnam, are investing heavily in improving the populations English.

Can I teach English online in Vietnam?

You can join teaching platforms from Thailand very easily if you have a TEFL certificate. Some schools disapprove of teaching online when you are working for them, so be sure to ask them if they will allow it.

It is a bit of a crazy rule since they cannot see what you do from your home, but we mention it because they have the power to terminate your contract if they do happen to catch you!!

If you wish to move to Thailand to teach English online and not work in a school or for any Thai business, then you will have to get long-stay tourist visas and do border runs to Cambodia or Laos every three months, or you can apply for a digital nomad visa.

Though, it sounds nice, teaching a few hours per day and heading to the beach to watch the sunset with a couple of bottles of ‘Singha’ or ‘Leo’ every evening.

Should I work in Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi?

Both cities are massive urban centres but offer slightly different lifestyles.

With around 9 million people living in HCMC and just under 5 million people in Hanoi, they are both huge!

HCMC is more of a modern city while Hanoi is that little bit traditional.

Being the two main cities of Vetnam they are the most expensive to live, of course.

But after your course in HCMC you are free to work in whichever city, town or village you wish.

There are my other great place to consider such as Dan Nang, Hoi An and Dalat to name a few. It is important to do your research to see which city meetsyour needs and requirements.

How much is a TEFL course in Vietnam?

A TEFL course in Vietnam will cost you between $1400 to $1800. This is not including flights, accommodation and food.

The good thing is that Vietnam has a considerably lower cost of living compared to back home. You can find accommodation for $200 per month.

Flights can set you back $400 more or less depending on where you are. You can survive on less than $5 per day if you really needed to. Food is extremely cheap. You can get a full meal for $1 or $2 and a couple of bottles of water.

While getting started in Vietnam can feel expensive, in the long run, and once you start teaching and earning money, you will see how much better the lifestyle is (and your bank account).

After a few months, you will have recovered the money you invested in yourself and from there, you will start saving fast!
