Can I teach English in Spain without a degree?

You can be hired by schools in Spain without a degree to teach English as a foreign language if you are a native English speaker. You will be required to have TEFL certification or even TESOL or CELTA certificates.

Some schools may require a degree but the demand for English teachers is so high in Spain that many English language centres do not have it as a requirement.

Taking a TEFL certification course will mean you have had training in how to teach English professionally and are familiar with teaching methods. So do not worry if you do not have or have not completed your degree.

How much do TEFL teachers make in Spain?

First-time TEFL teachers can expect to make between €13-€21 ($14.01-$22.64 USD) per hour. Depending on how many hours you work, usually 25-40 hours, you can earn €1,400-€3,640 ($1,509.26-$3,924.07 USD) per month.

Quick example:

Min. €13 x 25 hrs = €325 p/w x 52wks = €16,900 / 12mths = €1,408.33 p/month

Max. €21 x 40 hrs = €840 p/w x 52wks = €43,680 / 12mths = €3,640 p/month

As you can see in the quick examples, even if you get the lowest salary and do the minimum amount of hours per week you still come out with a great salary.

If you could find TEFL jobs in Spain that offer the highest hourly rates and full-time a teaching week you could make incredible savings! These are obviously the hardest to find and you might have to fight off the other teachers.

Is Spain a good place to teach English?

Spain is one of the best countries to teach English because it has a great salary, good cost of living, plenty of teaching jobs and accommodation, beautiful weather and tapas! You can easily visit all other countries in Europe from Spain or even head over to Morocco. Relaxed, safe and cultured you can’t go wrong with Spain!

Whatever city you decide to teach in, you can experience Spanish/ Iberian life in cities like Madrid, Seville, Murcia and Bilbao. Head for a beach holiday in Valencia or Malaga or head up north to Barcelona for a hit of the Catalan culture.

Do I need to speak Spanish to teach English in Spain?

You do not have to speak Spanish to teach English in Spain. Many teachers use their time in Spain to learn or practice Spanish but it is not a requirement. We encourage teachers to take Spanish lessons to help you with day to day tasks like going shopping or ordering food.

You will find living and working in Spain that you will begin picking up the lingo without even knowing it!

Are English teachers in demand in Spain?

There is a huge demand for English teachers in Spain currently. Tourism is one of Spain’s biggest forms of income. With many from English speaking countries, most other nationalities use English when abroad in Spain as their way to communicate with the Spanish people.

As the pandemic stopped many people from travelling it stopped many English teachers from going to Spain to work. Now is the perfect time to go as schools are crying out for teachers.

Can you save money teaching English in Spain?

It is very easy to save money in Spain as you will have a good salary and it is a very affordable place to live. If you choose a larger city like Madrid or Barcelona you can expect prices to be a bit higher than in smaller cities and towns but decide on the type of lifestyle you want in Spain before deciding where to live so you can save.

You have two options: Spend money shopping on the High Streets with the top brands, eat out every night, rent an apartment in the city centre to yourself and go out every weekend. As in any country, you won’t save much this way but you’ll have a pretty good time.

Alternatively, you could shop at local markets and cook the freshest local produce from home, live just outside the city centre or share housing and meet new friends and do some travelling at the weekend and still have an amazing time.

But, whether you save or splurge, it’s not my job to tell you how to live, you know what you want to do so go for it, either way, it will be one hell of an experience!

Should I teach English in Barcelona or Madrid?

If you want the authentic Spanish experience then it doesn’t matter which you choose as both Madrid and Barcelona are fantastic cities with endless things to do and see. What I will do is list a few pros and cons of each so you can have an idea of what suits your desire.

Barcelona is the main tourist destination for a reason. It has many famous sites and things to do and beaches to relax on. They speak Catalan Spanish and have authentic food that you may not find in other parts of Spain. Barcelona is more expensive than Madrid because it gets more tourists. Being by the Mediterranean, many cruise ships stop here daily which is great for the city and gives it a nice busy vibe, especially on Las Ramblas.

Madrid is the capital and bustling constantly but is quieter than Barcelona as it is far away from the coast which also means no beaches. Still, it has amazing food and one of the best nightlife scenes in Europe! Madrid is more affordable which is an important factor to consider when living abroad.

Remember, you are not stuck to these two cities. Once you get your TEFL certificate you can choose any city, town or village to go teach English.

Will I have time to explore Barcelona?

Though this is an intensive course where you will be in-class or doing live teaching practicum Monday to Friday full-time, you will still have the evenings and weekends free to explore Barcelona or visit nearby cities and towns so you can have the best experience possible.

There are optional excursions and trips you can do with the course and other TEFL teachers:

  • Barcelona city tours
  • Wine tasting tours
  • Spanish language classes

It is important to remember that you will have assignments, homework and quizzes to study and prepare for during the course. You should use the 4 weeks as the step up you need to stay in Spain long-term and then you can go party and explore to your heart’s content for as long as you wish to stay abroad in Spain or Europe.

How to get a Visa as a US Citizen to teach English in Spain?

The most common and easiest way is to apply for a Student Visa before you come to Spain. When you enrol in a Spanish language course part-time you are entitled to a student visa that allows you to work full-time as an English teacher.

Once you enrol in the course I can assist you throughout the entire process. The Barcelona team have been doing this for a very long time so they will be able to help you every step of the way, it’s almost like it’s their job or something.

So get in touch, sign up and we can get the paperwork started and get you on your way to sunny Barcelona!

How to find TESOL/ TEFL jobs in Spain?

You can apply for TEFL jobs in Spain online, by visiting the local schools in person or allowing us to set up interviews with schools for you. Once you are in the TEFL course we begin contacting schools in your preferred cities and towns to arrange interviews for you upon completing the course.

We cannot guarantee the school will hire you after the interview. That is up to you to impress them and prove to them why they should hire you, as with any job interview.

Most schools in Spain know about this TEFL course in Barcelona and respect the high standard that comes with it. Having your TEFL certification from a well-known course is definitely an advantage.

TEFL Course Barcelona vs TESOL Course Barcelona

You will most likely only find TEFL courses in Barcelona as TEFL means teaching English as a foreign language. In Barcelona, English is the foreign language.

TESOL courses are generally found in English speaking countries. TESOL means teaching English as a second language. They are intended to teach English to non-native English speakers living in English speaking countries as their new second language.

You may be thinking that that makes no sense and that they are pretty much the same thing but teaching TEFL in a country means all the students are from the same language and culture. Whereas teaching TESOL can be with students of all different languages and cultures mixed into one classroom.

Also, TEFL is preferred by schools all around the world which is why people wanting to travel abroad to work choose a TEFL certification course.

Best way to sign up for in-class TEFL courses in Barcelona

The best way to sign up and begin your teaching adventure in Barcelona is to pick a trusted company, apply and do an interview with them. Interviews are important to show the TEFL providers that you are fluent in the English language and are serious about teaching English abroad. If you are then you will happily be chosen to begin a TEFL course in Barcelona and begin your journey.

Here is where I am supposed to tell you to choose us because we are the best but I would rather tell you to do your research and choose the company that is best for your needs and that makes you feel comfortable.

If that is us, then that would be amazing but we will help you get to Barcelona whether you choose us or not because it is about travelling and helping others learn and that is rewarding in itself.
